The forests of the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests

"Strengthening and increasing the forest in Schleswig-Holstein through silviculture and preserving it with all its functions for future generations: All my colleagues from the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests make this contribution every day. The forests around Glücksburg are also part of the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests and are managed by us in a verifiably near-natural and sustainable manner as an FSC® (C010535) and PEFC-certified operation. The forests of the state forests are already 89% mixed forests and have been made fit for the fight against climate change for decades. In this way, we are safeguarding all forest functions for future generations in the long term. I hope you enjoy exploring and relaxing in the forests around Glücksburg."

The castle forest

The castle forest is located in the immediate vicinity of Glücksburg Castle. You can reach the spa center from the city center via the footpaths in the castle forest. The forest is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. From majestic oaks and gnarled beeches to delicate wildflowers, nature lovers will be in their element here. With a bit of luck, you might spot deer or squirrels. The castle forest shows a different side every season. In spring, the wildflowers bloom, in summer the trees provide soothing shade, in autumn the leaves glow in warm colors. When it snows in winter, the forest is transformed into a fairytale landscape. To the north-west of the castle lies the castle pond, surrounded by tall trees and offering a peaceful atmosphere that invites you to linger. The so-called royal oak stands on its northern bank.

The Friedeholz

The Friedeholz stretches from the center of Glücksburg to Schausende as an extensive forest that reaches all the way to the sea. This natural paradise of around 300 hectares was reforested in the 19th century as part of a planting campaign. The forest has a naturally peaceful atmosphere with diverse vegetation: young, sturdy trunks mingle with older trees, beeches, oaks and ash trees. Information boards provide information about the local environment. A wild boar enclosure invites visitors to linger and marvel. The fantastic nature playground is not just for children. The dolmen trail is several kilometers long and leads to ten Stone Age megalithic graves in Friedeholz. "Die Vogelwiese" in Friedeholz was once a pond area that was drained in the 19th century. Here, 25 hectares were rewetted in 2002. Stones mark field names such as "Die Elfenwiese" and stories tell of the past. In the forest museum you can learn many other interesting facts.

Tremmerup Forest

The Tremmerup Forest, located southwest of Glücksburg, is an impressive wooded area and consists of a mixed forest of beech and oak trees with diverse flora. Although large parts of Flensburg's forests were cleared after the Second World War, Tremmerup Forest still contains trees that are over 200 years old. The forest offers around 20 kilometers of riding and hiking trails, some of which are also dog walking areas. In the center of the forest is Lake Roikier, a unique forest lake in this region of Schleswig-Holstein. To the west is the Süderholz, also known as the Fördewald. The Tremmerup Forest stretches as far as Glücksburg Castle.

Forst Wille

Wille Forest is located on the outskirts of Glücksburg, between the Meierwik district and the Glücksburg Quellental area directly on the Flensburg Fjord. It is one of the few near-natural forests in the dome-shaped ground moraine landscape. It is a valuable forest area characterized by its natural beauty and biodiversity. The forest is home to rare plants such as mountain hard hay and spruce asparagus. The illustrious beech forest stretches along the slopes leading down to the fjord shore. The shapes of the beech trees are therefore bizarre due to the wind conditions by the sea. In addition to the gnarled beeches, there is also a magnificent variety of tree species such as oaks, pines, maples, elms and lime trees.
